Do You Remember?

Writer: John YoungJohn Young

I got this song, and it’s the jam. I mean, it’s really the jam. You ever hear a song that you just have to play over and over again? One of those tracks where the music is right, the beat is right, and the vamp is just perfect? That’s how I feel about this one.

It’s by the late, great Michael Jackson—Big Michael, not Little Michael. And you probably know the lyrics:

Do you remember when we fell in love? We were young and innocent then. Do you remember how it all began? It just seemed like heaven, so why did it end?

That part right there—Do you remember the time?—I love it. I just love it. Some of y’all were just vibing to the beat, not even paying attention to the words. But think about it—our love lives are like that, too. They start off hot, then suddenly, they cool down. One moment you’re holding hands, calling each other all night, writing names in notebooks, and the next, things are distant and cold.

Has anybody here ever been hot one minute and cold the next? Yeah, yeah. You were all in, inseparable, doing things in public you knew you shouldn’t be doing. And when you were in love, you did marvelous things—you took care of each other, went out of your way to make each other happy. Some people were so in love they even ironed their partner’s clothes—my grandmother used to iron my grandfather’s drawers and pillowcases!

But let’s talk about another love—God’s love. The sad truth is that sometimes, we treat God like a fleeting romance. We start strong, on fire for Him, then slowly, we leave Him behind. The Bible says in Revelation 2:4—You have left your first love.

Not lost—left. Losing something is accidental. Leaving something is intentional. You leave your keys somewhere without thinking. You leave a relationship because you’re not prioritizing it. And too often, we leave God on the back burner while we focus on everything else—our jobs, our health, our appearance. But where is God in our priorities?

Have you ever been in a relationship where you gave and gave, but never felt appreciated? You cooked, cleaned, worked hard, and they never even said thank you? Imagine how God feels when we do the same to Him. We wake up, go about our day, enjoy His blessings, but forget to spend time with Him. We don’t pray, we don’t worship, we don’t acknowledge Him—yet we expect Him to be there when we need Him.

And let’s be real—some of us have been guilty of stepping out on God. We spend time with distractions, with things that pull us away from Him, and we don’t realize that our absence grieves Him. God says, I am a jealous God (Exodus 20:5). If God reacted like we do when we get jealous, where would we be?

All He asks is that we remember. Remember the time when you first gave your life to Him. Remember how excited you were about your faith. Remember how you couldn’t stop talking about Him, how you wanted to tell everyone about what He had done for you. But now? Maybe your fire has dimmed. Maybe life got in the way. But let me remind you—God has always been there.

Do you remember the time when you were in trouble, and He got you out? Do you remember when you were hungry, and He made sure you ate? Do you remember when you felt alone, and He reminded you, I will never leave you nor forsake you? (Deuteronomy 31:6). Do you remember the time?

Sometimes, we’re our own biggest enemy. We blame the devil, but sometimes, it’s just us. We’re the ones choosing to neglect our relationship with God. And let me tell you—God knows how to get our attention. If we keep ignoring Him, He’ll remove distractions, shake things up, and remind us just how much we need Him.

But here’s the good news—God’s love is never-ending. Even if you’ve drifted away, even if you’ve left Him, He’s still there, waiting with open arms. All He wants is for you to remember and return.

So today, ask yourself: Do you remember the time?
